Can I Get HGV Training With Bad Credit?

5 min readBy HGV Academy

Yes, you can still apply for HGV training finance if you have bad credit. A poor credit history does not prevent you from applying for an HGV licence, and the DVLA and DVSA do not credit-check licence applicants. If you need help spreading the cost of training, HGV Academy offers two routes: external finance through Ideal4Finance and our own flexible 0% in-house payment plan.

Option 1: external finance through Ideal4Finance

Ideal4Finance is a credit broker, not a lender. Its panel of lenders considers a wide range of credit profiles, including applicants with less-than-perfect credit. A credit check is required and acceptance is not guaranteed. The rate and terms offered depend on your circumstances, the amount borrowed and the repayment period. Finance is subject to status.

This is normally the faster option. If your application is accepted and the course is funded, we can arrange your training and test dates without waiting for you to complete several monthly payments first. This can help you reach the practical training stage and work towards your licence sooner.

How to apply

  1. Build your course quote so you know the amount you need.
  2. Contact HGV Academy before applying so an advisor can confirm your course and available discount.
  3. Apply online or by telephone through Ideal4Finance and provide the requested personal and financial information.
  4. Wait for the lender's decision. Decisions are normally made quickly, but approval and the final terms depend on your circumstances.
  5. Start booking training. Once approved and funded, HGV Academy can lock in your course dates.

External finance can be the quicker pay-monthly route to getting your licence because the course can be funded at the start. Once funding is confirmed, training and test dates can be arranged without waiting for several monthly payments to clear.

Option 2: 0% in-house finance

Our in-house plan is a private payment agreement directly with HGV Academy. There is no lender, no interest and no soft or hard credit check. It is not a regulated consumer credit agreement and it is offered at our discretion.

This is the slower option, so please be aware that it can take much longer to get your licence. The overall timescale depends on how quickly you make your payments. Your medical and theory stage can begin after the £800 starter payment, but we only book your CPC 3a and 3b lessons and tests once your final payment has been completed and cleared. If getting your licence as quickly as possible is your priority, paying in full or using accepted external finance will normally be faster.

You do not have to wait for every scheduled monthly payment date. You can pay the remaining balance sooner, and once the full final amount has cleared, we can move forward with booking your CPC 3a and 3b lessons and tests.

The rules for our 0% in-house plan

How to apply for the in-house plan

  1. Build your course quote online.
  2. Contact HGV Academy on WhatsApp with your quote reference and ask for the 0% in-house plan.
  3. Review and sign the written payment agreement.
  4. Make the £800 starter payment so your medical and theory stage can begin.
  5. Pay the remaining 3 monthly instalments on the agreed dates.

What is the main difference?

Option 1 is normally faster: once external finance is accepted and funded, your course dates can be arranged without waiting for several instalments to clear. It involves a credit check, may charge interest and is subject to status. Option 2 can take much longer: our 0% in-house plan has no credit check and no interest, but we only book your CPC 3a and 3b lessons and tests after the full final payment has cleared. You can pay the outstanding balance earlier to reach the booking stage sooner.

If your external finance application is not accepted, you can still apply directly with HGV Academy for our 0% in-house option. We can discuss a payment plan that suits your circumstances, subject to our agreement. Build a quote first, then contact our team to talk through the available payment schedule.

If you are unsure which route fits you, speak to HGV Academy before applying. Borrowing carries risks: missed payments on external finance can cause financial difficulty and damage your credit score.
