Question 1

How do I start HGV training?

Accepted Answer

Get an instant quote with our course builder. Your advisor confirms pricing, books your medical and theory kit, then schedules your practical training.

Question 2

How old do I have to be?

Accepted Answer

You must be at least 18 to hold a Class 1 or Class 2 provisional licence in the UK.

Question 3

Do I need a car licence first?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you need a full UK car (Category B) licence before you can begin HGV training.

Question 4

How long does it take to get an HGV licence?

Accepted Answer

Most students go from application to test-ready in 4–8 weeks, depending on medical and theory slots in your area.

Question 5

How much does HGV training cost?

Accepted Answer

Every package includes the medical, theory kit, training, tests and CPC, and the price depends on how much of the process you've already done. Get your exact price with an instant quote from the course builder.

Question 6

Do you offer finance?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our main finance option is through our partner Ideal4Finance - spread the cost over 1–5 years with a soft-search decision in minutes. Subject to status.

Question 7

Can I get finance with bad credit?

Accepted Answer

Ideal4Finance work with a panel of lenders and consider a wide range of credit histories - most people who work full-time qualify. It's a soft search, so applying won't affect your credit score.

Question 8

Is there a £200 discount?

Accepted Answer

Yes - mention it when you contact HGV Academy on WhatsApp with your quote reference and we'll apply a £200 discount to the total before you apply for finance.

Question 9

Do you also offer 0% in-house finance?

Accepted Answer

Yes - as an alternative to Ideal4Finance we offer a 0% in-house payment plan directly with HGV Academy. An £800 first payment (which can be reduced on request) starts your course: D2 & D4 forms, medical, theory test bookings and theory revision kit. The balance is then split into equal monthly payments, and once the final payment clears you get the rest of the package - driving lessons and test, reversing lessons and test, CPC Module 4 revision and test, plus any extras. No formal credit check.

Question 10

What is the HGV medical?

Accepted Answer

A DVLA D4 medical form completed by a registered doctor. Includes vision, blood pressure, general health and diabetes/heart questions.

Question 11

How long does it take?

Accepted Answer

About 30 minutes. We book you the earliest available slot - usually within a week.

Question 12

Will conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure fail me?

Accepted Answer

Not automatically. Most controlled conditions are fine - the doctor decides on the day and can advise on next steps.

Question 13

What is the HGV theory test?

Accepted Answer

Two parts: multiple-choice questions and hazard perception clips. You need to pass both to move on to practical training.

Question 14

How does the theory kit work?

Accepted Answer

You get unlimited practice questions, mock tests and hazard perception clips - the same style as the real DVSA test.

Question 15

How many attempts do I get?

Accepted Answer

As many as you need. Each retake costs £26 (DVSA fee), and our theory kit is included in every course package.

Question 16

Where does training happen?

Accepted Answer

Everywhere. We have training centres right across the UK - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland - not just West London. Give us your postcode and we’ll match you to your nearest centre.

Question 17

How many hours of driving do I get?

Accepted Answer

The Complete Class 1 package includes around 30 hours of practical training, plus dedicated reversing practice and a mock test before the real thing.

Question 18

What if I fail my test?

Accepted Answer

Retake it. If you bought Pass Protection, your retest fee and extra hours are covered - otherwise we book the earliest slot and quote the cost transparently.

Question 19

Do I need Driver CPC?

Accepted Answer

Yes, to drive commercially. All our packages include Module 2 and Module 4 CPC training and tests.

Question 20

Will you help me get a job?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our new-driver job finder matches your licence and location to hiring UK fleets. Many students have an offer within a month of passing.

Question 21

What salary can I earn?

Accepted Answer

New Class 1 drivers typically start on £35k–£42k basic in the UK. Experienced drivers can earn £50k+ with tramping or specialist work.

Question 22

What is Pass Protection?

Accepted Answer

Optional cover that pays for your DVSA retest fee and extra training hours if you don't pass first time. Bronze, Silver and Gold tiers available.

Question 23

Is it worth it?

Accepted Answer

Around 45% of Class 1 candidates don't pass first time in the UK. If you'd struggle to find £250–£500 for a retest at short notice, yes.

Question 24

Can I get a refund?

Accepted Answer

Yes, within 14 days of booking, before your medical is booked or theory kit accessed. After that, see our refund policy for full detail.

Question 25

What if I miss a payment?

Accepted Answer

A £50 missed-payment fee applies. Reach out early - we're usually able to reschedule if you speak to us in advance.
