Yes, for up to 15 days, as long as you follow the rules below. Report the problem and apply for a replacement straight away.
The 15-day rule
You may drive for up to 15 calendar days without your card while a replacement is being made. Your employer must record the situation and confirm that a replacement has been applied for. If it takes longer, you must stop driving until the new card arrives.
Start and end of day printouts
- At the start of each drive, print out the vehicle's activity from the tachograph.
- On the back, write your name, driver card or licence number, and sign it.
- Add any activity not on the printout, such as other work or rest.
- At the end of the drive, do another printout, fill it in and sign it the same way.
- Keep the printouts with you and hand them to your employer.
Getting a replacement
Apply to the DVLA straight away using form D777B/DL. A replacement costs £19 and carries the same expiry date as the card it replaces. See fees and all the details in our digital tachograph card guide.
